It's time for a makeover!

I've been away from this little blog for a while now and before I get started again, Suite 7 Creative the blog is in need of a makeover! So, excuse my dust for the time being and check back soon for new posts!

The Yard: After...well kind of!

So in the delay from my last post, we had a rain storm and then a week of sun. I'm not complaining, but our lawn is totally dead! So, although the yard looks a thousand times better, it isn't necessarily a green oasis!

The biggest improvement? Our new patio and raised beds! We've gone from this

I love the patio so much...it is such a great place to sit and have dinner or drinks with friends. We re-used the pavers from the old path, so it was really inexpensive! To add a little texture and life, we made a rock and succulent garden under the ridge of the house

We've continued the rock motif on the other side of the patio too. We have some more succulents to plant here too...it acts as a great barrier keeping the gravel from the path from spilling onto the patio.

Of course, we still need an umbrella, seat cushions and some bright accessories, but on our budget, it is a HUGE improvement.

The rest of the yard is a little dry, but we've created a great blank slate with cut beds and an enhanced moss filled front path

We have a bit more to save and then its off to the nursery to fill the yard up with some green!

Yard Make Over {Part One}

We have been enjoying fantastic weather here in Seattle...28 straight days of sun! Fantastic! With all this great weather, Stein and I have really been working hard on our outdoor space. When we moved in, in October, this is what we started with...

There was a rickety picket fence around one side of the house...

and a pre-fab tall fence on the front side of the house...

We live on a bit of a busy street and to maximize the sale price, the seller tried to re-route the entrance of the house to the side of the house vs. the front. It really doesn't make any sense, so we quickly went to work, removed the old fence and built a nice new (consistently styled) fence all the way around the property.

We moved the gate to the front of the house and got to work putting in a new front walk...

We pulled up the red pavers from the previous path and as a budget saver plan on reusing the bricks for a new patio.

Then we got to work with a sod cutter, clearing out beds along the fence and leveling an area for the patio...

We've made so much more progress since then, it is amazing to look at these original photos. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post to see where we are now!

Cuter by the Minute!

Zoe, or "Little Z" as we like to call her, has been growing and growing and is getting cuter by the minute. When we brought her home, she was so little...

She loved running around the yard and especially eating grass (well, really anything in site...leaves, weeds, moss...you name it!)

Slowly, her ears started popping up. I loved it when she had one up and one down...

She is such a good dog and we absolutely love her. I have to admit, she is about the cutest thing I've ever seen. I'm not the only one who thinks so...she stops traffic wherever she goes! :)

I can't believe how big she is getting...pretty soon we'll have to change her name from Little Z to Big Z!

Fancy Vodka...To Go!

You know I am an addict of well designed packaging. Because of this, I visit the site Lovely Package often and ooh and aahhh over the selected projects. This one really popped out at me today...

How fantastic is that? Kraftstoff Vodka by The Deli Garage has some of the best packaging I've seen in a long time. A built in flask? I mean really, how can you go wrong?! It comes in three unique flavors...

There is Melon Mint

Ginger Coriander...mmmm

and Espresso.

I just love the illustrations...detailed and cheeky. How great are those flavors...I think I need to hop on a plane to Germany to check these guys out!

Stylish Compost Pail?

Seattle has finally started collecting food scraps for compost. It is a great service, but leaves us with the stinky problem of what to do with our food scraps. It isn't always convenient to run outside to the yard waste bin, every time you cut an apple. So, I've been hunting for the perfect counter top compost "pail". Here is what I've found...

I love this bamboo option from Olive Barn. With convenient features like a liner that can go in the dishwasher and a charcoal filter to keep the stinkys away, it is a great option!

This stainless steel pail is a classic from Crate & Barrel. The entire pail goes in the dishwasher here...love that!

There is the hammered copper option from Gardener's Supply Company for the country kitchen.

Or a brightly colored ceramic option...

My favorites however are these beautifully hand made ceramic options from Rabbit Creek Studio...

Looking much more like sculpture than a bucket on your counter, these lovely pieces are complete with holes in the lid for air flow and an area to insert a charcoal filter...perfect!

I love gold...I always have. Ever since high school when everyone was wearing chunky silver jewelry, I was still sporting dainty gold pieces. That is why I am in LOVE with the new "Hold" line from Prismera.

Introducing our new addition...

ZOE! She is a lot of work, but is about the cutest thing I've ever seen! We picked her up on Saturday and it has been fun ever since...

She loves to hide under the couch...look at her cute little feet!

And the best is when she is on her back...you can see her little corgi ears pop up! I can't wait until they stay.

I love this little girl. She is going to keep me busy for awhile!

More Fantastic Packaging

Now this packaging is clever! CCC Brands, a specialty food manufacturer in Chicago created a line of specialty spices that they wanted to share with the masses. They came up with the great idea of branding them around a '20s '30s era Chicago gangster theme and hired MondoVox to make the design come to fruition. Well, look what they came up with!

Called "The Spice Outfit" this fantastic line feature clear windows that display the sumptuous spices inside with each holding their own individual gangster identity.

Taking gourmet seasonings and giving them a kitschy, gift like theme is so smart. I guarantee consumers are willing to pay a little more for the specialty tin...what a great gift idea! Excellent job, if I do say so myself!

Stein and I bought our first house in Ravenna in October and we just love it. Being in a neighborhood so close to the University of Washington is great. There are tons of wonderful little restaurants around, we are close to shopping and UW athletics are just a hop skip and a jump away! Because of this, I had to feature the University's newest member today. Welcome to the neighborhood Dubs...you are about the cutest mascot around!

Bellissimo!

I was blessed to take a trip to Florence a year and a half ago and absolutely fell in love with the city. The spectacular architecture, amazing art, warm people, exquisite food and superior shopping makes it one of my favorite places in the world. While there, I took a sneak peek into a new group of luxury vacation residences that are so unique and beautiful, they took my breath away...

Palazzo Tornabuoni is a residence club run by the Four Seasons in the heart of Florence. It is housed in a 15th century palace which was once the home to Pope Leo XI and the Medici family. It is a membership only club featuring spectacular amenities and the most lovely accommodations I've seen.

It is so dreamy and GORGEOUS! Look at this living room...perfection.

The high ceilings, the moldings, the dark wood floors. White and luxurious and pops of pink. I don't think I could imagine anything better. But then you go to the bedroom...

I would love to lie down in that cushy bed after a long day of site seeing...and then spend some time here...

Are you kidding me? A chrome bathtub? And that amazing mosaic floor. I think it is heaven.

The beauty doesn't stop here. They've really restored these places so perfectly. Luxurious linens, amazing decor, opulent bathrooms AND modern kitchens...

I {heart} Beautiful Packaging

I love packaging. I really do. When studying design in school, packaging was what made my heart soar. I knew, when I graduated, I would dive into the world of professional packaging design head first. Well, life took over and I never quite fulfilled my dream. In fact, through the days of wonderful design in other arenas, I kind of forgot about packaging design all together. I always appreciated it, but forgot how much I LOVE it.

I've decided in an effort to reconnect with what I love, I should highlight some of the best packaging I've seen in a long time....drum roll please, take a look at Love Joy Vodka...

Ahhh, the proportion of the bottles, the modern patterns, the perfect typography. I adore the concept of having different labels for the same product allowing consumers to choose which design fits their mood and decor.

Clean, award worthy design. It is perfect. Designer Jared Milam deserves huge props! I am officially inspired...

I've been plugging along working on my house. Choosing home decor items that bring it warmth and style, but lets face it, with this economy it is more important to stay on budget! I was perusing my local Target store this weekend and I have to say I was more than impressed with their Home Design Event.

Granted, we're not talking showroom quality here, but the design of these pieces are right up there! And the cost...are you kidding? The whole collection is currently 30% off! Check out my favorites...

The Ceana Chair is about as perfect as it can get. It comes in a lovely shade of grey canvas and is only $299 or $419 for the pair! A steal...

I love this Branch Side Table. It has a fabulous organic shape, is made of real wood and covered in a black lacquer which is oh so chic! At $62.99 you can't go wrong!

This Woven Floral Rug is so lovely and is only $83.99 for a 5'x7'...it would look very pretty in our bedroom.

I've admired these Root Wooden Bowls for a long time and at $34.99, they are half the price of those I've seen in boutiques!

I could seriously go on and on. I don't think this collection is going to be available forever and if your Target is like mine, some of the best stuff has already been picked off. I had to share though, style like this for such a cheap price is just too good to pass up. There are tons of items available...treasure hunt for yourself and let me know what you get!

Living Graffiti

I was excited to find this article about living graffiti on the inhabitat website. What a novel idea. Artist Edina Tokodi is taking standard graffiti to a whole new level...

Creating living installations made entirely of moss, Tokodi is interested in the tie between man and nature and how people (specifically city dwellers) feel a disconnect with the environment. A large part of her art simply involves watching how passers by react to the living pieces. Do they stop? Do they walk right by? Do they dismantle the pieces or begin to care for them?

This idea of art as a living thing, having a life of its own and ever changing really intrigues me. Adding to the environment's beauty and bringing nature to places where natural beauty is sparse...what a creative idea!

Artistic Headboard

I was visiting one of my favorite sources for inspiration today, apartment therapy, looking for ideas to use in my bedroom. I stumbled across this fantastic idea for a unique, stylish and personal headboard...

Really, it is very simple. Find an oversized old frame from a piece of art or mirror, knock out the contents and hang it behind your bed. Fill it with photos, postcards, images and momentos and voila, you have a perfect headboard that is unique to you! I love the simplicity of it...I was so impressed I had to share!

Rainbow Connection

I'm loving this colorful city love poster from accesori on etsy...

Perfect typography and my favorite cities! It comes in a version in shades of purple too, but I love the bright primary colors of this version.

They also make this wonderful rainbow poster...I think I must get it for my office!

I've been in such a color rut lately...always going tone on tone and muted with my color schemes. This little guy reminds me there are a whole rainbow of fruit flavors out there. Yum!

Bean Stalker

This is one of the strangest, yet cool products I've seen in awhile. SMP's Bloom in a Can Message Bean is so creative!

Found online at the A+R Store this crazy bean is laser engraved with one of eight messages from "Dream" to "Best Wishes" to "Love" or "Good Luck"...a message that is revealed after the magic bean is planted in the provided container and grows into a beautiful little plant!

Isn't that clever? Who would think of that? What a sweet gift for Valentine's Day. You can plant a seed and watch your love grow! Awww....

Where have I been?

Well, it has been a busy couple of weeks. We had loads and loads and loads of snow, topped off by three feet by Christmas morning at my Mom's house just outside of Seattle!

We had a lot of christmas fun, full of lovely decor. My Mom's tree is always my favorite...

But, we didn't do too bad ourselves decorating our little living room.

I was so sad to take it all down, but by New Year's Eve, it had to be done! We had a great time ringing in the new year at a local pub with friends...

And to top it all off, we've almost finished our bathroom...we spent the first couple of days of the year painting and painting...

First, we had to scrape off some of the old flakey paint. Can you believe the colors that have been used over the past 80 years?

Well, we took care of that with a nice clean coat of silver grey paint. I love it!

We have a nice new shower head, and it is at the proper height!

The grey looks so great against the white trim, sink and toilet!

Now, the finishing touches. We have a new fan/light combo which is functional and great

And our gorgeous light fixture will go up here, above the medicine cabinet next week!

As soon as the light is up, I'll post more pictures. Now, on to the dilemma of staying with a neutral grey, white and black palette or going for a pop of color. We still need a shower curtain and perhaps some art above the toilet. There are so many options, I just can't decide!

Let it Snow?

Look what we woke up to...more snow!

Are you kidding me? We are supposed to head downtown this morning. I'm seeing the Color Purple at the Paramount Theater this afternoon with some girlfriends. I hope we can make it. Then off to my Mom's tonight for Christmas festivities. I'll be back blogging next week (hopefully!)...happy holidays to you all!

Christmas 2007

Snow Days

It has been snowing and snowing and snowing in Seattle. It is like nothing I've seen here before! It snowed another few inches after we took these shots and it is supposed to snow again tomorrow!

We've been house bound for several days and have gotten a lot done. I spent a while yesterday chipping away stray grout in the bathroom and scrubbing down the new tile floor.

And the best part? Our sink is finally here. I absolutely LOVE it! Isn't it pretty?

It is the jewel of the bathroom. :) We're taking a break for the holidays and work should start up again on the 26th. More pictures to come.

Making Progress!

The tile is up and the toilet is in...we're making progress!

I absolutely love the floor and think the wall looks fantastic. And our little toilet makes a huge difference with space!

Up next, the sink, light fixtures, wall paint, new mirror frame and shower hardware. Yippee!

Demo Time

The bathroom is completely demolished...it is so exciting to watch!

Bye bye little old toilet!

Our plaster had to be removed to make way for backer board to tile over...

We opened up the wall under the window in the shower to check for water damage. Amazingly, all is well. No water damage to be seen after 80 years of use!

I can't wait for our new fixtures! Next up...tile.

Let the fun begin!

It is about that time...bathroom renovation time that is! Here are the before pictures of our little gem of a WC...

As you can see...it is pretty small.

There is a charming original tile mosaic floor, but it is chipped and stained and doesn't do much for the style of the room. We'll be replacing it with a gorgeous Carrara marble floor in a basketweave pattern with a black dot like this...

The shower is in desperate need of a retile and refixture job. We're going to reglaze the cast iron tub, and are tiling the shower surround in a white subway tile.

I'm so excited to have our shower head placed at the right level. Right now it hits me right in the middle of the chest and don't even get me started about the four handles we have going on. What is that about?

The toilet is mounted about 6 inches away from the wall which creates a very cramped space. We've purchased a smaller, round toilet that will give us much more room. It will also be remounted so it is a normal distance from the wall...no more wasted space! Now our knees won't hit the tub! :)

Finally, my favorite part...we'll be adding tile wainscoting half way up the wall and replacing our teeny tiny sink with this masterpiece!

Isn't it pretty? I think it is really going to create the biggest visual change to the room. I also had the idea of having our contractor add an outlet to the inside of the medicine cabinet. Now we can put our Sonicare toothbrushes away and not have them out for all to see. Yippee!!

Mirror, Mirror

Yippee the mirror went up in the living room today!

I love the way it looks. It was a bit of an endeavor hanging it with plaster walls. I had visions of it crashing down and breaking everywhere. But, thanks to the help of Adam our trusty friend and contractor it is hanging securely in all its glory! Now the question is, what to put on the console beneath it...

I love this black and gold tray from Target. For $20, who could beat it? It is pretty matchy, matchy though...I'll have to think on it. Any ideas?

Feelin' Frosty

I don't know if I just haven't noticed, but it feels like we had our first frost of the season in Seattle today. Brrr...it has me thinking about new scarfs to keep me warm and fashionable as it gets colder and colder. I'm loving the short "neck warmers" as I call them...

This one from Homelab on etsy is so cute and feminine. I love the color and the big bow...

This darling neck tie is so simple. I think the bright pop of yellow would brighten up even the darkest Seattle day. Find it at Anthropologie. Then there are the real warmers, full of abundant knit. They just make me want to wrap up in them and get cozy!

This Tousled Scarf, also from Anthropologie is so elegant. I love the overflowing fabric...luscious! Finally, my favorite...

I love this hood from pixiebell on etsy. Doesn't it look so warm? Cute too. A perfect combo of hat and scarf. I can't wait to get one for myself. Stay warm out there!

Design Update: Living Room

Remember what it looked like before?

Well, we've made some changes. We still have a lot to do, but we're getting there with the design of our living room!

We've painted our walls a gorgeous warm grey that really ties the living room and dining room together making it a very cozy space.

We picked up this little number from the antique market. We just love it. It adds a bit of glamour to the room and the deco brass lamps fit perfectly. Plus, it gives us a ton of extra storage! Perfect!

We've mounted our TV on the wall, which really opens up that corner of the room. We're still working on what to put below it, but for now we have a small modern white shelving unit to hold our components.

We've had a great time sitting in front of the fire on the recent blustery evenings we've been having. This place is really starting to feel like home.

Although the room is great as is, there are a few tweaks I want to make to the design to really finish it off. The cover of the sofa is projecting a blue tone in this room which isn't working for me, so I'm getting a dark grey wool cover come January when they're back in stock.

The next step is a rug and accent pillows. The current pillows are really just a mis match grouping from pillows I've used in the past. I'm loving these pillows from Great Jones Home that were recently featured on coco+kelley (the ikat multi color behind the elephant pillows).

I think they would add a great pop of color to the room. I'd tie them in with coral colored shades for the brass lamps on the cradenza. I'd finish off the room with this rug...

I think the dark color will really help ground the room and I'll never have a light colored rug again after the flokati. It is filthy!! Of course I'll spruce up the place with great accessories and a piece of art above the mantle. We also have this mirror from Brocade Home that is going up this weekend between the lamps, above the cradenza.

Fun! I'm really excited about the direction we're headed in. I can't wait for it all to be done. I'll keep you posted as the room transforms!

Puppy Love

I know, I know, I must be crazy...with all that is going on right now, why would I want to throw a puppy into the mix? Don't worry, I know it is not the time, but darn, I want a puppy!

The plan is to get a blue merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi some time next year. We even have a name...Blue! Aww...

I've been researching breeders for a long time and of course, my favorite breeder in Oregon just had puppies! Look at these little guys...

Ohhh, so cute. And Cardis grow up cute as well...I just love them!

I've grown up with Corgis my whole life. My Mom still has a Pembroke (without tail) named Sadie and she is a real part of the family. Check her out at Christmas a couple of years ago...he he, I love this photo!

OK, I'm getting off point. I'll continue to follow the pups from afar and come Spring, I can't wait to introduce you to our little Blue!

I know it is a bit redundant, my constant love for the Fleet Foxes, but the Fleet Foxes in Paris of all places...what could be better? This video is gorgeous on many levels. I love it.

The mood was fantastic at the show. It was a great homecoming with the band giving shouts out to their friends & family. Even old teachers. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to. As I admire our new cedar fence that surrounds 80% of our house, I wonder at the beauty of wood. What an amazing natural resource with so many uses. Check out these designs...all of you guessed it: WOOD!

I love this mobile called Samara from Adrift Mobiles. My Dad had a cool mobile of various pinecones hanging in his living room as I grew up. This reminds me of it in a sleek, modern way. I can just envision it hanging in the corner of my office. You can pick your own up here.

These wooden USB Sticks from OOOMS Dutch Design Studio are ingenious. Who would have thought of that? I love the mix of nature and technology. Soo great!

I guess I'm inspired by my surroundings, because this wood stapler would work perfectly in my office as well. Do I feel a theme coming on? Pick it up at the Curiosity Shoppe.

I could go on all day, but this is my favorite...

How great is that wood clutch? I mean really, how do people come up with this stuff?! This groovy little number can be snatched up here and comes in ebony or zebra wood with white or black leather lining or maple and walnut with gorgeous screen printed details. Yummy!

Introducing...the house!

Here is the first peek into our little place (call them the "before" pictures)...it is a great stucco bungalow and we love it!

You walk in through the arched leaded glass front door into the living room.

To the right is the office...and home to Suite 7 Creative!

The living room features our huge fireplace with original craftsman tile...

Immediately across from the front door is the arched doorway leading into the dining room.

Next, we have our little, and I mean little kitchen. Amazingly enough, we've cooked quite a few meals, and it actually functions fairly well!

On to the bathroom. This little guy is getting a major overhaul come December. We're talking new floors, new tile, sink, fixtures...the works! I can't wait.

Finally, we have the den...

and the bedroom.

So, as you can see...it has good bones. If I do say so myself. We have lots of plans to make it our own. Lots of work and I'll keep you posted all the way. Stay tuned for shots of the place with our furniture all moved in as well as "after" pictures, coming soon!

What does this have to do with Suite 7 Creative you ask? Well, I’ve worked in the event industry for a long time and quite frankly, I missed it. I will be joining forces with Kelley Moore Creative Media Events to provide event management services as well as in house graphic design services for our clients.

Stein just sent this to me and I just had to share it. There he is working away in his office and what does he see out the window? Spider Man! What a great costume for a window washer. Way to celebrate the season, man! I love it. I just can't get enough of this guy.

Strip Teas

I was visiting my favorite coffee shop, Muse Coffee Co. this weekend on Queen Anne and discovered Brent is carrying a new, hip, spectacular, fun, yummy tea called Strip Teas.

The design of these little puppies is just ingenious. In a tall aluminum foil perforated pocket, the entire tea "strip" is environmentally sound and 100% recyclable. The unique shape allows for the tea leaves within to unfurl releasing the fantastic flavors into the water and is the perfect shape to act double duty as a stir stick!

Packaging is just charming and the teas come in six spectacular flavors including Masala Chai (a black tea with ginger, pepper, basil and a touch of cinnamon), Pushkar Rose (just as it sounds, flavored with rose) and Maristar (with marigold petals and sweet anise).

The Oxford Project

When visiting Revival Home and Garden last week, I came upon a book that made me think, laugh and thoroughly impressed me...The Oxford Project.

This genius book was created by Peter Feldstein in 1984 when he set up a sign offering "free portraits" in the town of Oxford, Iowa. His intention was to photograph all of the town's 673 inhabitants. By the end of his campaign, he had captured the images of 670 of the townspeople. None of them were posed, simply caught in their natural light.

The real magic happened when Peter came back to the town 21 years later in 2005 and re-photographed many of the same folks. Some had passed and most had changed, but amazingly a large number of them still lived in the small town. Peter invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to accompany him to capture the subject's narrative on their own life. The only parameters..."to tell the truth." And so The Oxford Project was born.

Pat Henkelman offers a story of infidelity, faith and daily life here.

Hunter Tandy speaks of his life's passion, his second cousin Ashton Kutcher and life in a small town here.

Darrell Lindley speaks of his gruesome but necessary job, life and death, the war and his favorite pass times here.

The stories are touching and eye opening and are a glorious look into the daily lives of those around us. I particularly enjoy the photos of children in '84 who are now grown. The way they recount their hopes and dreams and reveal how life has turned out reminds us all of our past and dreams for the future. I've added The Oxford Project to my list of must haves and will pick it up for sure!

There's No Place Like Home

I'm thrilled to announce Stein and I are homeowners! We got the keys to our little jewel last night and spent the evening planning renovations, making decor plans and sharing our dreams for the future.

Center to our discussion was the review of Domino's new book...The Book of Decorating

The book is officially released on October 14th, but one of my favorite shops here in Seattle, Revival Home and Garden has pre-release copies! Their fantastic shop is going to be featured in an upcoming Domino issue, so they were blessed with a great shipment of early books. I rushed over yesterday to ensure I had my copy for our evening of brainstorming and couldn't be more thrilled with the publication. It is like a fantastic scrapbook of my favorite rooms featured throughout the years in the magazine along with helpful hints and how tos. I'm calling it my decorating bible, but it really is like "Decor 101".

Run down to Revival to get one for yourself or definitely pick one up on the 14th...it is well worth it! Tre Magnific!!

I {heart} the Fleet Foxes!

Last Spring, Stein introduced me to the Fleet Foxes. We went to see them live at Neumos and I instantly fell in love. Their beautiful melodies and spectacular (and I mean SPECTACULAR) voices are otherworldly. Check them out for yourself!

They give me chills...I hate to put them in a music box, but it is like CSN&Y and Fleetwood Mac got rolled up in a shiny new package with masterful lyrics and classic harmonies that take you away. You really must see them live!

They are really taking off and now inspiring a whole new group of artists. Check these ladies out...

Sharing my same admiration (covering the Fleet Foxes Tiger Mountain Peasant Song), these Swedish sisters (going by the name First Aid Kit) have wonderful voices of their own. I love how music is just a big inspirational circle. Maybe I should just say I {heart} music, but for now, I'll stick with my favorite and say I {heart} the FLEET FOXES!

Yummy Or Creepy?

I came across these Vanishing Creatures commemorative chocolates by Walteria Living...

The series of chocolates including busts of a pygmy hippo, mountain gorilla and koala bear commemorate endangered species. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the chocolates go to aid WSPA.

Can you believe this amazing Manhattan apartment? All I can say is...yes please!

Real estate mogul (and one of the top 100 bachelors in NYC as named by Gotham Magazine) Matt Blesso's fantastic apartment is a dream designed by two Yale design professors...Joel Sanders, architect and Diana Balmori, landscape architect. They specifically focused on bringing the outdoors and indoors together with the landscape design highlighting the fantastic features of the space's architecture.

If that outdoor shower isn't enough for you, look how they bring the outside in here...what a GORGEOUS bathroom!

That plant wall is spectacular. The rest of the interior is just as fine with organic furniture, graffiti style art and a master bedroom completely encased in glass that turns frosted for privacy with the flip of a switch!

I know jealousy is wrong...oohhh, but I am! What a lucky boy Mr. Blesso is!

Tis the season for one of my favorite flowers of all time...Dahlias!

My sweetie brought me a huge bunch of them last night and I now have them scattered all over my house. Reds and oranges in the living room,

pink and white in the kitchen

and pale yellow in the bathroom.

I love how each flower is different with their own personality. They brighten any room and certainly make me happy. I'm so excited to plant a cutting garden full of them so my house will be full of blooms by next summer. Gorgeous!

Chandelier Make Over

I've recently been touring a lot of houses in the Seattle area shopping for the perfect home to settle down in. My aesthetic leans toward modern interior design, yet the majority of the architecture in the homes I've been viewing is traditional/vintage. These craftsman charmers feature wood floors, coved ceilings and chandeliers to boot. How do you dress up a chandelier to make it modern without painting the whole piece a shocking bright color?

My latest love for chandelier renovation is Kaarskoker. They create decorative replacement candle sleeves for just about every chandelier style. Why didn't I think of that?! What an idea. Here are a few of my favorites.

Throw in some round bulbs vs. the traditional flame shape and you're good to go! The sleeves are so decently priced, you can change them for every season! I can't wait to make over a chandelier of my own.

I love these! I was making my usual blog rounds and surfed on over to Design Sponge...one of my favorites. I've been a bit slammed with work the past week and haven't kept up on articles and in perusing the archive found these...

They come in gorgeous scents like Gardenia and Persian Fig and can be purchased at delight.com. For $19.50...they are a steal! I can just envision them being used on a kids table with hand drawn artwork or as a perfect back to school gift for a teacher. So clever!

Portfolio: Muse Coffee Co.

I've had the pleasure of working with my dear friend Brent to provide signage for his fantastic coffee shop Muse Coffee Co. Located on the West side of lovely Queen Anne, Muse definitely has its own style. Brent already had a rockin' logo:

And a modern, funky interior...

Wanting to stick with the existing design forward, trendy look of the space, I created a white vinyl cling menu that Brent adhered to his charcoal grey walls.

The greatest part? If Brent changes his menu, all he has to do is pull off the vinyl cling and remount a new one!

Next we tackled the pastry case...we wanted a similar look so we went with a "mini-menu" look for price tags...

Again, needing flexibility, we created blank cards that Brent can write on in white wax pencil if he offers new products.

I have to say...it all turned out swimmingly. Muse is such a fantastic place and has become one of my favorite hang outs. The environment is warm, the people are friendly, the internet is free, the music is superior, the coffee is spectacular (Herkimer!), the treats are decadent and they host all kinds of fun events like a rotating art gallery and Monday night Purl Jam, a fun knitting group. Best of all, Brent is a gem. I encourage you to check them out!

The Magno Wooden Radio designed by Singgih Kartono is sooo fantastic! It is built of sustainable wood and is compatible with most mp3 players! If you want to pick one up, you can find it here.

They also make a smaller version which is just as charming.

I can't decide which one I like better. I love how they slightly look like wood shop projects...simple and organic, but upon closer inspection are detailed, finely made music machines! Bravo!

House of Cards Video

Radiohead recently released an impressive video for their song "House of Cards"

No cameras or lights were used. The entire video is composed of data collected by lasers and scanners which creates intricate 3D images. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes. The only way to really understand it is to watch the making of the video...

What a fascinating, evaporating, data-driven world! I respect Radiohead so much for using alternative technologies in their videos. They truly are cutting edge and inspirational.

I was treated to quite the culinary experience last night at a superb new Italian restaurant on Capitol Hill called Spinasse.

To begin with, the decor is spectacular...rustic and charming it is like dining in a friend's home. A friend with a gorgeous eye for design! Worn wood beams punctuate the walls and four family style tables surrounded by mismatched wood farm chairs fill the room. Drippy candles and Italian art hang on the walls which encompass a fantastic bar topped with honed Carrera marble and deep dark wood shelves. The windows are covered with delicate lace adding to the traditional yet modern homey feel. Romantic and fun...I loved it!

A salad of marinated beets, fennel and local farro: one of my favorites

Fine hand cut egg pasta with ragu: Rich while staying light...did I mention they hand make all their pasta in house?

Huckleberries marinated in Grappa with a dollop of freshly whipped cream: Fantastic...sweet and tart with perfectly smooth cream....ahhh

I know, I know...are you kidding me? It was so flipping good. Not to mention the cocktails and wine. We were in heaven!

Recently I visited his new website. I love it!

Ingenious BBQ

Even though the grill season of Summer is coming to an end, I couldn't pass up featuring this fun find.

Direct Design's "Notebook Portable Grill" breaks down to a notebook sized flat unit that can be carried by hand.

Portfolio: Queen Anne Apartments

I recently completed a fun project for some friends of mine who purchased a fantastic vintage apartment building on Queen Anne. They were in need of a whole new identity for the building...so we started with the logo. Its "regal" Queen Anne location was the inspiration for the crown like mark used, while the text treatment used is hip and fresh but still holds true to the era of the building.

Next we determined a color scheme of deep chocolate brown and crisp white, marrying the historical aesthetic of the fantastic building with a modern, clean twist.

The final look was applied to their "For Rent" sign...which turned out beautifully!

I'm really pleased with the final identity and it was a great treat to get to work with friends!

Jumbo Fun!

Sleeping in an airplane...that is the worst! There never is enough leg room and only a billionaire can afford the seats that barely recline in First Class. But what if the airplane had all the amenities of a swanky hotel?

OK, this baby won't ever take off, but what a wonderful idea! Swedish entrepreneur Oscar Diös recently acquired a worn out Transjet 747-200 and decided to turn it into a hostel...Jumbo Hostel! It is located just outside of the Arlanda Airport in Stockholm, Sweden and has a spectacular view of the runway. The "hostel" features 25 sleeping rooms including 3 bunk beds in each.

All rooms have a flat screen TV where you can watch TV, movies or check the departure times for all flights. The hostel is fully wireless and all rooms have access to shared showers and toilets. A few more luxurious rooms upstairs boast their own bathrooms.

If shacking it up with strangers isn't your cup of tea, you can always book the Cockpit Suite. It is surely a unique room with more space, a private bathroom and gorgeous panoramic views of the runway from the airplane's front window. Can you imagine?!

Bookings start in December...if you're headed that direction, maybe you should check it out! Reservations are accepted on their website. I can't wait until they release photos of the interior. Futuristic and mod, I'm sure it will be spectacular!

Pop Up!

I had a pop up Hansel & Gretel book when I was a little girl and I absolutely loved it. It was so fun to see the characters jump off the page in three dimensions with little nooks and crannies to fuel the imagination. Well, I felt the same way when I found these DIY Kirigami pop up cards.

The Good Old Days

All the talk of yearbook photos yesterday got me looking back on my childhood again. As I reminisced, a variety of fun memories came up. Thanks to YouTube, you can walk down memory lane with me...are you ready?

Don't Let Summer Slip Away!

Where are all the yummy warm days of Summer? I've said it once and I'll say it again...it is NOT Fall yet! With that in mind, on this long weekend, live it up like one only can in the Summer months. What is the best way? With a tropical drink of course.

I was thumbing through Sunset Magazine last night at a friend's house and found this luscious treat. Enjoy and have a fun & safe long weekend!!

TROPICAL MAI TAI

Ingredients
2 tablespoons light rum
2 tablespoons orange curaçao
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 dash orgeat
1 dash simple syrup
1 tablespoon dark rum
Mint, a pineapple slice, and a paper umbrella for garnish

Preparation
1. Fill an 8-oz. glass with ice. Pour in light rum, orange curaçao, orange juice, lime juice, orgeat, and simple syrup.
2. Drizzle dark rum on top. Garnish with mint, pineapple slice, and paper umbrella.

Yield
Makes 1 drink

Etsy Love

I often find myself killing a lot of time on etsy. If you aren't familiar, it is an online marketplace for artists where they can feature their handmade items and will be the location of the future Suite 7 Creative shop (coming soon).

My most recent find is Heather Knight Ceramics at Element Clay Studio.

I love the modern, organic shapes of her work. These urchin bowls would be perfect for my apartment...

You can use them as votive holders, a great place to hold your rings or just beautiful art objects. A handful of the pieces come with a glazed interior which hold a great pop of color!

I love the way they look in groups...

They even have beautiful orb sculptures to offer. I love them!

So, I know I've been a little stuck lately...posting about travel, then Radiohead then travel then Radiohead. See a pattern? Well, this is the perfect blend. When in Amsterdam, Stein and I came across a fantastic gallery featuring the work of Stanley Donwood. Known as the "Radiohead artist", Donwood produces amazing, ironic, whimsical art that has been featured on Radiohead albums since 1994.

Donwood has a fantastic website called Slowly Downward. Check it out! You can purchase your own print of his work. Wonderful! Geniuses must run in packs...

I'm Back!

I feel like I haven't been home for 2 seconds this summer and now all of a sudden it feels like fall. Where have all the lazy days of summer gone? I had a fantastic trip to Oregon to visit with my family. We did a river float, went to the Corvallis farmer's market and did a bit of shopping. I captured a few colorful shots along the way...enjoy!

The Radiohead concert last night was one of the best shows I've seen in my life. The energy was fantastic, the music was out of this world with intensity and emotion and the stage set of lights and video screens was like nothing I've ever seen before. Long ropes of energy saving LED lights hung from the ceiling truss creating a "room" around the band. With each song a different lighting scheme was projected and illuminated...pulsing and moving to the beat. Really, utterly fantastic. I'll have to do some research as to who designed it. I am impressed!

I'm so excited for tonight...I can hardly get my work done. What am I doing tonight you ask? Going to Radiohead! Woo Hoo!! Being one of my favorite bands for a long time, I know this is going to be a fantastic evening. I love their current album In Rainbows and can't wait to hear this one live and in person...

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is one of those songs that makes my heart leap. The haunting melody and driving beat really take me away. It is amazing when a song hits you emotionally and this one definitely does. Goose bumps...Oh, I can't wait!!

Wonder Wood

While wandering through the Amsterdam streets, Stein and I stumbled upon one of the greatest shops I've seen to date. Wonder Wood is a treasure trove of vintage and new wood pieces. They specialize in museum quality seating but love all things wood. Stein and I walked in and couldn't believe our eyes. The best part? They have a fantastic website full of glamour shots of their collection. Here are some of our favorites:

Lekker!

While toughing it out through what felt like the storm of the century when touring Leiden, Stein and I decided we needed to escape the rain and get a warm afternoon treat. We hopped into a Bagels & Beans to take shelter. I didn't think I would get anything, but then thought...aw, it is vacation. I should indulge! I decided to get a hot chocolate and holy cow...what a fantastic treat! This is what arrived at our table.

Mmmm...whipped cream! And what was the little treat to the left? I figured it was just a bonus candy. Stein was always getting little cookies and candies along with his coffee and espresso. I thought this must be one of those free little treats. I unwrapped it and saw that it was a cube of chocolate on a stick. Hmmm...?

Well, I figured, great...a piece of chocolate! I set it aside and went for what usually is my favorite part of the hot chocolate experience. Whipped cream of course. Well I went to dig in with my spoon and felt that there was a dish beneath the cream. Removable whipped cream...strange. I lifted off the saucer and suddenly the mystery was revealed. The cup was filled with hot steamed milk. Hmmm....I must mix in the chocolate on the stick! Brilliant. I proceeded with excitement and wondered what the finished product would be like.

After mixing in the chocolate, I added the side of whipped cream and went in for the kill. This had to be good! It looked perfect.

Oh man, was it ever perfect. I swear to you, it was the best hot chocolate I ever had in my life. Rich and creamy, with the perfect blend of bittersweet chocolate. Nothing like the powdered stuff or the concoction made with chocolate syrup. This was pure heaven.

I slurped it down in a hurry and felt like a giddy little girl. I was in love. I had to cry out my favorite Dutch word..."lekker" (aka "yummy")! All that warm chocolate goodness prepared me to venture back out into the rain. A fantastic discovery...now if I could only get the holy grail of hot chocolate in Seattle!

Tulip Vases

While visiting the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, we saw a fantastic collection of Delft Blue Pottery or "Delftware" including a small collection of vintage Dutch Tulip Vases. I especially loved the Pyramid Vases. Can't you just imagine a pair of these in your home?

Upon my return home, I've been on a mission to find myself my own version of these spectacular vases. Well, they are a bit harder to find than I imagined and are quite expensive! This small version from Royal Delft is almost 500 Euros!

This much less expensive version from Rawhide Studios doesn't quite hold the same charm, but may have to do.

Or maybe this one from Dutch Village, but it is still almost $300!

I may just have to turn to a modern interpretation (and that is hardly settling!). The spectacular designer Lotte van Laatum has released a gorgeous line with her own take on the classic tulip vase called "Tulipa Vases". These are fantastic!

This one is only a prototype, so it isn't for sale yet, but it is my favorite

Lots of amazing options, but none that are quite right. I will continue to hunt until I find the perfect vase...I'll keep you posted!

Beautiful Amsterdam

As we arrived in Amsterdam, I knew we were going to have a great time! I was able to cash in some Starwood points and got a great deal at the Hotel Pulitzer on the Prinsengracht Canal. They must have known this was a special trip because they upgraded us to a King room with a lovely view of the canal in front of us.

Our hotel was perfectly situated in the center of everything and we quickly made our way out to explore the city. Again, it was a blazing hot day, so we decided to take a canal tour. I can't say it was the best idea with the heat, but the tour itself was wonderful giving a unique view of the city. I hope in future trips to take another tour...maybe at night!

The first "site" we visited was the Rembrandt House. It was a wonderful place to explore...Rembrandt's actual house! Because he was bankrupt at the end of his life, he had to auction off all of his belongings. He provided a detailed list of his pieces from each room which the museum has used to restock his home exactly as it was left! Beautiful.

I really enjoyed just looking at all of the classic canal houses. They have such a unique look...I could have taken hundreds of photos!

I love the look of these red shutters...

This one was our favorite. Hey, what is that guy doing on our balcony? Stein and I couldn't help but see the gorgeous interior of this place one night through the backlit window. Fantastic beams, modern furniture...perfect!

I really don't have words to describe the area. Ancient foot bridges, homes and buildings slightly crooked and full of character and beautiful accents. I love it!

We didn't just see houses. We of course visited many museums and landmarks.

The Rijks Museum was fantastic, but my favorite had to be the van Gogh Museum. He is my favorite artist of all time. Walking through this fabulous place was almost life changing. The paintings are superb and evoke such emotion. I wish I could have taken pictures of my favorite pieces, but I came home with a lot of postcards and the gallery book.

We rounded out our historical visit with a trip to the Anne Frank House. Now that truly was emotional. Honestly, I barely made it through the house before I broke down. It has a huge impact and although it is obviously upsetting, I definitely recommend seeing it if you are ever in town. What a hero Anne is.

On a much, much, much lighter note Stein and I had a wonderful snack one afternoon...poffertjes! We had them at the Pancake Bakery and I highly recommend them! YUM! Mini, puffy pancakes with lots of butter and sugar. Can you tell I am hungry now?

We finished off our evening with a trip to the Red Light District. Kind of crazy...quite an experience. Not for the faint hearted. Cover your children's eyes!

To round out the fun, the last day we were in Amsterdam was a massive gay pride festival and canal parade. You wouldn't believe how many people were out partying! Of course the parade was right in front of our hotel so we had a fantastic view. The canal was completely packed with boats filled with people dancing, huge speakers producing very loud music and lots of pink! What a fun time. Stein and I even got a little dancing in to super hip Dutch pop music. I see now why David Hasselhoff is so popular internationally for his music. Not quite my taste, but really quite fun!

Overall our trip was absolutely spectacular. It was an absolute pleasure to meet all of Stein's family members. They were truly warm and hospitable and really spoiled us. Holland is like a dream and Spain is enchanting. Our time in Amsterdam was a blast and I can't wait to go back for more!

Our flight home was uneventful, except for the fact that our entertainment system was broken. That's right...NO movies. Ugh. But we did get a spectacular fly over view of Greenland. Pretty cool!
